Actions of Connecting is a community-based methodology I’ve created to achieve certain aims of my Master’s artistic research (AR): “Fissure: trans-(de)-displinary artistic research to break silences on subjugation and exploitation”.

I want to emphasise that I organised this methodology because I couldn’t find an appropriate one to pursue my aim: connect with people in a meaningful way; share and expand knowledge from this AR with the participation of people from different disciplines, including people who are not certified in any discipline – those who couldn’t attend any kind of formal education. As trans-(de)-disciplinary research I seek to mind the gap between specialists and non-specialists. Therefore, I’m currently practicing this methodology inviting people to partake in order to assess and evaluate for my thesis.

Actions of Connecting:  a methodology for my artistic research

The methodology includes three methods:

1. Sharing: this method is the main tool that I’m using to enable the encounters with people in the format of 1:1 or small groups (max 5), in Europe and Brazil (mostly in person but also online). The sharing can happen in an alternative place such as a cafeteria or in the studio. I establish a talk from the daily about my lived experiences entangled with the contents of my artistic research and we engage on an exchange of experiences tackling the breaking of one’s silence in relation to experiences of subjugations and exploitation. The sharing is not an interview, it is a talk in which both can make questions and share what they feel comfortable. Besides that, everything that is said is confidential.

The talk of the sharing is not recorded due to its confidentiality, but at the end of each encounter I ask 2 questions that are recorded in an audio:

- What resonates with you after the sharing?

- What is the fissure in your words?

The audio recording is the documentation of the sharing.

2. Co-lab = co-creation in collaboration: is the moment after the sharing which we – I and the participant, engage on co-creating something together. The co-creation focuses on giving format to what have emerged from the sharing, a kind of “connecting knowledge” on the crossroads of our lives. It can be a collaborative writing, an audio that we voice a poem, an intervention, a graphic, diagram, anagram, performance, among many other things. Not everyone partakes this part, only who feels comfortable and willing to. The co-lab is scheduled to another date, it does not happen on the same day of the sharing.

The co-lab is either documented through photographs, short videos, audio recordings, or the document itself when it develops through writing.

3. Disseminating: consist on this online platform in progress of my artistic research – fissura.art, in which all documentation of the sharings and co-lab – audio recording and co-creations, from all encounters are uploaded. Thus, all the documentation gathered throughout past, current and future encounters will be available on this platform.
